What to do…
There are tons of things to keep you occupied if you get beached out! To name a few….
For the sporty ones..
Horse riding – lots of stables within a 15 minute drive
Walking – fabulous walks along the coastal path and through the marine heritage park all the way to Pembrokeshire and beyond.
Golf – two good courses nearby, both open to visitors
Canoeing – white water kayaking at Llandysul, 30 minutes away
Water sports – New Quay has it’s own water sports center offering sailing and windsurfing.
Quad Biking and Go Karting – two places one near Aberaeron, the other near Cardigan
Fishing – regular trips leave from New Quay pier - mackerel for supper anyone?
For the others…
The Dylan Thomas walking trail – as mentioned in the New Quay section
Welsh Coracle Museum at Cenarth – 30 minutes away
Llanerchaeron – a National Trust property near Aberaeron (15 mins drive)
Celtica – A museum celebrating the lives of the celts at Machynlleth (1 hours drive away. The town is also worth a visit, has lots of local craft shops and is a bit new –agey)
The Centre for Alternative Technology – a really interesting outdoor park dedicated to educating us about renewable energy resources and sustainability. Great vegetarian café. Also at Machynlleth.
Bird Watching – The Red Kite center at Tregaron – 35 minutes drive.
Steam Railways – the area is littered with them! The nicest one is from Aberystwyth to Devils Bridge.
Boat trips – In good weather and high season boats leave every couple of hours from the pier in New Quay for leisurely trips up and down the coast. If you ‘re lucky you will get to see the Dolphins.
Aberaeron – the next town along the coast. A very pretty Georgian town with brightly painted houses, a harbour and lots of shops and places to eat and drink including the Hive on the Quay with it’s famous honey ice creams – worth a trip for this alone. Also has an Aquariam which does not exactly compete with the biggies but might be worth a look if it is pouring with rain.
For the children…
Lots of the things mentioned above are also great for children, particularly The Centre for Alternative Technology, the steam railways, the aquariam at Aberaeron, fishing and boat trips. In addition there are the following
Oakwood which is a theme park with lots of roller coasters etc and is supposed to be great but it is around 1hr 30 mins drive
The Cardigan Island Coastal Farm Park, a farm park situated right on the coast with all the usual animals plus rare birds and seals are more often than not spotted from perimeter fences.
The Animalarium at Borth (45 minutes drive) lots of unusual animals including crocodiles!
